Free Museums In Berlin: Always-Free Sites, Free Days And Who Gets In Free

Berlin keeps a large layer of museum visiting genuinely free: state-funded documentation centres, memorial exhibitions and a few museum-level free evenings. This guide separates what is always free, what is free only on a day or for a group, and what is simply paid.

Short answer

Berlin has no citywide free museum day since Museumssonntag ended on 1 December 2024. What remains free: Topography of Terror, the Berlin Wall Memorial centres, the Jewish Museum core exhibition, the Humboldt Forum's five named areas, and the Neue Nationalgalerie's first-Thursday evening from 4 to 8 pm. Under-18s enter every Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venue free.

Berlin's museum landscape splits into two very different layers. The state and federal memorial foundations run documentation centres and exhibitions that are free to enter, funded publicly, with guided tours as the only paid layer. The big state museum groups, Museum Island and the Kulturforum among them, are ticketed, with free entry reserved for specific groups and one museum-level free evening. Confusing the two layers is how visitors end up paying EUR 24 for a Museumsinsel-Ticket expecting a free day that no longer exists.

The citywide free day is gone. Museumssonntag Berlin, the first-Sunday scheme, ended with its last edition on 1 December 2024, and the official Museumssonntag page confirms the scheme is over. Several older travel articles still describe it as running. This guide follows each operator's current entry rules and names what is paid, so nothing here reads freer than it is.

Which Museums In Berlin Are Always Free?

Ten Berlin institutions charge nothing for their core exhibitions: Topography of Terror, the Information Centre under the Holocaust memorial, the Berlin Wall Memorial's open-air exhibition and its two centres, the German Resistance Memorial Center, the Tränenpalast, the Museum in der Kulturbrauerei, the Hohenschönhausen Memorial's exhibitions, the House of the Wannsee Conference, the Jewish Museum's core exhibition and the Humboldt Forum's five named free areas. Each has a paid layer or a condition, listed below.

These are the sites where free admission is the operator's own standing rule, not a promotion. The memorial and documentation foundations, Topography of Terror among them, state free admission outright: the exhibitions at Topography of Terror are open daily 10:00 to 20:00, the outdoor areas until dusk, closed 24 and 31 December and 1 January, with only the audio guide and special events charged separately.

The Berlin Wall Memorial works the same way on Bernauer Strasse. The 1.4 km open-air exhibition runs 8:00 to 22:00 and is free, the Documentation Centre (Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, observation tower last ascent 17:45) is free, and the Visitor Centre is free. Guided tours are the paid layer: EUR 5, reduced EUR 3, EUR 7 reduced EUR 4 for tours over 90 minutes, and workshops EUR 12 reduced EUR 8. The memorial is open on 3 October 2026 and closed 24, 25 and 31 December 2026.

The Jewish Museum Berlin is free for its core exhibition, the other presentations in the Libeskind Building and ANOHA, the Children's World, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00 with last admission at 17:00, closed Mondays plus 14 November and 24 December 2026. Temporary exhibitions in the Old Building are the exception at EUR 10, reduced EUR 4. Time-slot tickets can be booked online or taken at the counter.

Humboldt Forum Five named areas Mon, Wed to Sun 10:30 to 18:30, Tue closed Exhibitions EUR 9, media guide EUR 3

Two entries in that table deserve a second look. The Hohenschönhausen Memorial's exhibitions, "Imprisoned at Hohenschönhausen" and "Involuntary Community", are free, but the former Stasi prison itself can only be entered on a guided tour at EUR 9, reduced EUR 5, pupils EUR 2.50. The Stasi Museum on Normannenstraße is a different, ticketed museum and is not part of this free layer at all.

The Humboldt Forum is partly free, never simply free. Five named areas carry no charge: Insights. The Humboldt Brothers, the Palace Cellar, the Sculpture Hall, the Video Panorama and the "On Water: WasserWissen in Berlin" presentation, with many educational programmes also free. The main exhibitions are EUR 9 each, and under-19s enter free.

Which Museums Have Free Entry Days?

Only one Berlin museum prints a free evening on its own page: the Neue Nationalgalerie, free every first Thursday of the month from 4 to 8 pm under the Volkswagen Group Art4All programme. The Berlinische Galerie's first Wednesday is a reduced EUR 7, not free. The Berliner Philharmonie's lunch concerts are free every Wednesday at 13:00 from September to June, with capacity capped.

The Neue Nationalgalerie's evening is a museum-level programme, not a rule across the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The SMB concessions page does not mention it, so it cannot be extended to the Gemäldegalerie or the Hamburger Bahnhof. Under-18s are free daily at the Neue Nationalgalerie with proof, as at every SMB venue. The museum's standard admission price outside the free evening is not printed here; check the museum's own page or the ticket desk for the current figure.

The Berlinische Galerie's "Happy Wednesday" is the most commonly misreported scheme in the city. It is a reduced price, EUR 7 for all, on the first Wednesday of each month, against the regular day ticket of EUR 12, reduced EUR 7. Under-18s and refugees enter free. The museum is open Wednesday to Monday 10:00 to 18:00 and closed Tuesdays.

The Philharmonie lunch concerts belong on this list even though the Philharmonie is a concert hall, not a museum. Admission is free, every Wednesday at 13:00 from September to June, about 40 to 50 minutes, in the foyer of the main auditorium. For security reasons the number of listeners is limited and each visitor takes a chip at the entrance. There is no ticket sale and no guaranteed seat. The concerts pause in July and August.

Scheme Where When What it actually is
Volkswagen Group Art4All Neue Nationalgalerie First Thursday monthly, 16:00 to 20:00 Free entry
Happy Wednesday Berlinische Galerie First Wednesday monthly Reduced EUR 7, not free
Lunch concerts Berliner Philharmonie foyer Wednesdays 13:00, September to June Free, capacity capped by chip
Under-18 free entry All Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues Daily with proof Free, not a day scheme
Museumssonntag Citywide Ended 1 December 2024 No longer running

Two free-day rumours circulate that no operator page supports: a free first Thursday at the Hamburger Bahnhof and a free first Friday at the German Museum of Technology. Neither appears on those museums' own pages. Both are ticketed museums, the Hamburger Bahnhof with under-18s free daily and the Technikmuseum at EUR 15 online or EUR 17 on site, reduced EUR 9 or EUR 11, under-18s free.

What Day Are Berlin Museums Free?

There is no free day for Berlin museums. Museumssonntag, the all-city first Sunday, ended on 1 December 2024 after 2.2 million visits across 42 Sundays in 81 museums, when state funding was cut. The only recurring free window is the Neue Nationalgalerie's first-Thursday evening, and the only standing free rule is the SMB's free entry for under-18s and listed groups.

The end of Museumssonntag is the single biggest change to free museum visiting in Berlin in years, and it is why so much online advice is now wrong. The scheme ran from 4 July 2021 and gave free first-Sunday admission at 81 participating museums. The SMB prices and tickets page now lists only the standing rules: free entry up to 18, for supervised school groups, accompanied lecture-time students, ICOM and German Museums Association members, press, and Bürgergeld and similar benefit recipients, each on proof. A free ticket is taken at the counter or booked online. There is no free first Sunday and no blanket free evening.

The free layer at a glance: ten always-free sites, one museum-level free evening, and the first-Sunday scheme that ended in December 2024.

What a paid museum day costs now is worth knowing before planning. The Museumsinsel-Ticket is EUR 24 for one day on Museum Island, the Kulturforum-Ticket is EUR 22 for one day across the Gemäldegalerie, Kunstbibliothek, Kunstgewerbemuseum, Kupferstichkabinett, Musikinstrumenten-Museum and Neue Nationalgalerie, and the 3-day Museum Pass Berlin is EUR 32, reduced EUR 16. Reduced rates are 50 percent for students, trainees and others.

Closures matter as much as prices this season. The Pergamonmuseum is closed for major renovation until its partial reopening on 4 June 2027, with the North Wing and northern central building returning and the South Wing closed to about 2037. The Märkisches Museum is closed for renovation, becoming part of a Museums- und Kreativquartier by 2029. The German Historical Museum's Zeughaus and permanent exhibition are closed, with temporary exhibitions in the Pei Building at EUR 7, reduced EUR 3.50, combi ticket EUR 10, reduced EUR 5. None of the three should be on a visiting plan as a walk-up museum.

Museum Status Admission
Pergamonmuseum Closed until 4 June 2027 None, closed
Märkisches Museum Closed for renovation None, closed
German Historical Museum, Pei Building Open, temporary exhibitions EUR 7, reduced EUR 3.50
Museum Island (four museums open; Pergamonmuseum closed until 4 June 2027) Open Museumsinsel-Ticket EUR 24
Kulturforum museums Open Kulturforum-Ticket EUR 22
Hamburger Bahnhof Open, ticketed Under-18s free, price not printed
German Museum of Technology Open, ticketed EUR 15 online, EUR 17 on site
Museum für Naturkunde Open, ticketed EUR 11 adults, under 6 free

A museum day in Mitte also pairs naturally with a free introduction to the city, and the free walking tours listed on this site cover exactly that ground. Three of them meet in the historic centre: Walkative! German-And-English Intro Walk, a GuruWalk listing rated 4.92 out of 5 across 6,858 GuruWalk reviews, 2 hours 45 minutes, meeting at Rotes Rathaus; Moon Dog Classic Centre Walk, a GuruWalk listing rated 4.9 out of 5 across 259 GuruWalk reviews, 2 hours 30 minutes, meeting at the Neptune Fountain; and Highlights Walk With Musical Twist, a GuruWalk listing by Axel rated 4.94 out of 5 across 143 GuruWalk reviews, 2 hours 30 minutes, meeting at Brandenburg Gate.

Each of those three runs on GuruWalk, free and pay what you want, with the guide's own GuruWalk page carrying the meeting-point details. The full picture of what these tours are and how the pay-what-you-want model works is in the free walking tours in Berlin guide.

Which Groups Get Free Entry?

Under-18s enter every Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venue free, daily, on proof, and the Humboldt Forum's exhibitions are free under 19. The German Historical Museum is free up to 18, the Berlinische Galerie free for under-18s and refugees, the German Museum of Technology free under 18, and the Museum für Naturkunde free only for children under 6. Adults outside these categories pay full admission everywhere except the always-free sites.

The SMB rule is the broadest in the city and it covers Museum Island, the Kulturforum, the Hamburger Bahnhof and the Neue Nationalgalerie together. A free ticket is taken at the counter or booked online, and the proof requirement is real: identification for age, documentation for the other categories. The reduced rate for everyone else is 50 percent for students, trainees and similar groups.

Beyond the state museums, each operator sets its own age threshold, and the differences are easy to miss. The Humboldt Forum's exhibitions are free under 19, not 18. The Museum für Naturkunde, which is not part of the Staatliche Museen, charges adults EUR 11, children from 6 and concessions EUR 5, families EUR 18, and is free only under 6. The German Historical Museum's Pei Building is free up to 18 years and free with a Berlin Welcome Card All Inclusive.

Group Where it applies Condition
Under 18 All Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues Daily, on proof
Under 19 Humboldt Forum exhibitions On proof
Up to 18 German Historical Museum, Pei Building On proof
Under 18 Berlinische Galerie, German Museum of Technology On proof
Under 6 Museum für Naturkunde On proof
School groups, students, ICOM members, press, benefit recipients Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Supervised or accompanied, on proof
Refugees Berlinische Galerie On proof

A day built around the free layer also leaves room for a classic-centre walk, and the most established option meeting at Pariser Platz is SANDEMANs Original Free Tour, a freetour.com listing rated 9.4 out of 10 across 35,412 freetour.com reviews, 2 hours, in English and Spanish. It is free, pay what you want, and its tour page here carries the meeting-point details. This site lists 37 free walking tours in total across GuruWalk and freetour.com, and this Free Things To Do In Berlin directory exists to point at exactly these kinds of pairing.

The always-free sites in this guide cost nothing at any age, which is why they anchor so many Berlin on a budget itineraries. The memorial foundations keep their exhibitions free to enter: Topography of Terror, the Wall Memorial and the Wannsee House simply open their exhibitions to everyone.

What Is Free During The Long Night Of Museums?

Nothing. The Long Night of Museums is a ticketed event: EUR 23, reduced EUR 17. The 2026 edition ran on 29 August; the next one is announced for 28 August 2027. It is never a free museum day, and the ticket covers the participating museums for that one night.

The event is worth knowing about precisely because it is sometimes mistaken for a free opening. One ticket covers the participating museums for the night, which makes it a different product from free admission. The Long Night of Museums site carries the current edition's details, and the 2027 date is listed there as a save-the-date.

For anyone planning around it, the picture in Berlin is this: the Long Night is a paid festival, the Museumssonntag free day is gone, and the standing free layer is the memorial foundations plus the group and evening rules above. If a trip falls on the last weekend of August 2027, the Long Night may be worth its ticket. Otherwise the free museums listed in the first section are open on their own ordinary hours.

The Philharmonie lunch concerts are the closest thing the cultural calendar has to a recurring free event, and they are not part of the Long Night at all: Wednesdays at 13:00, September to June, free, capped by the chip at the entrance. Dates listed for this autumn include 7, 14 and 21 October 2026.

Which Free Walking Tours Fit Into The Same Day?

The free walking tours listed on this site pair naturally with the free museum layer: classic-centre walks meet at Pariser Platz, Rotes Rathaus and Potsdamer Platz, all within reach of Museum Island and the Wall Memorial's free sites. SANDEMANs Original Free Tour, Historical Centre, English And Spanish, and Rude Bastard's English Free Tour all run on freetour.com, free and pay what you want.

The freetour.com listings are the ones to know around Pariser Platz. SANDEMANs Original Free Tour, covered above, meets there. Historical Centre, English And Spanish, run by Culture and Touring Tours Berlin, is also a freetour.com listing, rated 9.4 out of 10 across 7,157 freetour.com reviews, 3 hours 30 minutes, in English and Spanish, meeting at Pariser Platz.

Historical Centre, English And Spanish covers the same meeting point with a longer format, and its freetour.com page carries the current schedule. Between the two, a morning walk and an afternoon at the always-free sites in Mitte make a full day with no admission spent.

Rude Bastard's English Free Tour, run by Can You Handle It Tours, is the third freetour.com listing, rated 9.2 out of 10 across 178 freetour.com reviews, 3 hours 30 minutes, in English, meeting at Potsdamer Platz. Potsdamer Platz is also the natural jumping-off point for the Kulturforum's ticketed museums and the always-free Topography of Terror nearby.

For visitors whose free day leans toward the Wall and Cold War material rather than the classic centre, the wall-and-cold-war walks on this site are the match. English Cold War Special By Alexis is a GuruWalk listing rated 4.93 out of 5 across 1,222 GuruWalk reviews, 3 hours, in English, meeting at Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Strasse U-Bahn. Short English Wall Walk By Behzad is a GuruWalk listing rated 4.95 out of 5 across 577 GuruWalk reviews, 2 hours 30 minutes, in English, meeting at Schwartzkopffstrasse U-Bahn. Karl Marx To The Wall Walk, by Walkative! Tours, is a GuruWalk listing rated 4.79 out of 5 across 362 GuruWalk reviews, 2 hours 45 minutes, in English, meeting at Rotes Rathaus. All three are free, pay what you want, and each guide's GuruWalk page carries the meeting-point details.

GuruWalk's own pages flag additional costs on the Karl Marx To The Wall Walk, with no amount or detail given here. The Wall Memorial's free open-air exhibition and centres on Bernauer Strasse sit naturally alongside these walks for anyone building a divided-city day, and the Berlin Wall Memorial guide covers that site's free and paid layers in full. For the broader question of which museums charge and which do not, the Museum Island guide works through the island's own ticketing.

Common Questions About Free Museums In Berlin

Are All Museums In Berlin Free On Sundays?

No. The citywide first-Sunday scheme, Museumssonntag, ended with its last edition on 1 December 2024. No Berlin museum operator currently offers a free Sunday, and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin state plainly that there is no free first Sunday.

Is Museum Island Free?

No. Museum Island is ticketed, with a one-day Museumsinsel-Ticket at EUR 24. Under-18s enter free daily on proof, as do the other listed SMB categories such as supervised school groups and ICOM members. The Pergamonmuseum on the island is closed until its partial reopening on 4 June 2027.

What Happened To Museumssonntag?

The scheme ended. The last Museumssonntag was on 1 December 2024, after 2.2 million visits across 42 Sundays in 81 museums, because the state's funding for Kulturprojekte Berlin and the state museums was cut. Older articles still describe it as running.

Is The Long Night Of Museums Free?

No. It is a ticketed event at EUR 23, reduced EUR 17; the 2026 edition ran on 29 August, and the next is announced for 28 August 2027.

Do Under-18S Get Into Berlin Museums Free?

At every Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venue, yes, daily and on proof. The Humboldt Forum's exhibitions are free under 19 instead. The Museum für Naturkunde, which is not a state museum, is free only for children under 6.

Is The Hamburger Bahnhof Free On Any Day?

It is a ticketed Staatliche Museen zu Berlin museum with under-18s free daily on proof. No free-evening rule is printed on its homepage or its concessions page, so no free day can be stated for it.
